Farewell Nebraska!

We are on the countdown to our move which will take place in about 10 weeks. All in all, our 22 months (by the time we move in June) has been good. Some things we experienced in Nebraska: Folks say "pop" for soda, the food is quite bland (sorry), no good Mexican food, there are lots of corn fields, we went ice skating, Jayce rode his sled, we watched people ice fish, we heard a different accent, we got funny looks for our southern accent, we welcomed Lakyn into our family, we celebrated Jayce's 5th birthday, we celebrated Lakyn's 1st birthday, Brad shoveled snow, our neighbors looked after us, Lakyn crawled, Lakyn took her first steps, Jayce and Brad watched the Huskers play football, Jayce fell in love with hockey, Shannon made great friends, Brad started a new job, Jayce caught his first fish, Shannon experienced a pregnancy here, Brad and Jayce planted butter beans (had to have Nana ship those to us), walked many miles at Walnut Creek Rec Area, Jayce and Lakyn rolled around on the floor playing together, Lakyn had her first bath, Lakyn saw her first snow, Jayce got on the school bus from our driveway, Jayce made many friends, Jayce played football, Jayce took swimming lessons, Jayce took ice skating lessons, we went to the zoo, we played at the park, we had many meals at our table, we read books to the kids, we heard our kids laugh, we heard our kids cry, Jayce and Lakyn chased each other around the circle (through the living room, into the dining room, through the kitchen, and back to the living room), Jayce caught a rabbit, we talked on the phone with our family, sent and received emails from family and friends, spent Christmas in Kansas City,....lots of memories.

It is hard not to get attached to a house. I wasn't excited about this house in the beginning. I was afraid it would be too small, and wasn't sure of the neighborhood. We have made so many wonderful memories in this house, and our neighbors have been wonderful! Once we walk out these doors for the last time, it will no longer be our home. Home is where the heart is. Our home is our family. Wherever our family goes, that is where our home will be. We are nervous at where we will end up living next. I'm sure we will become attached once again because of the memories we will make.

Thanks for the memories!

Waiting on Spring!

Even though the calendar says it is spring, mother nature here says it isn't. It is slow coming, but we are seeing the signs. The snow is gone, the grass is turning green, and the stores are carrying bathing suits! Our temps have been mostly in the 40s, but we've seen a few temps in the 50s. We are supposed to see temps in the 60s this weekend. I'm hoping the kids will get a chance to get outdoors instead of just dreaming about it.

Paying for my Raising!

Brad says Jayce gets it from me.....wondering off! My Mom has several stories about me wondering off. Sometime before Kindergarten, my Dad picked me up from the highway on his way home from work as I was making my way to the neighbor's house. When I rode the school bus for the first time in Kindergarten, I got off with some other kids instead of at my own house. Yep, my Mom just watched the school bus go right on by the house. Another time, I decided to be a "walker" instead of a bus rider, and walked to my Papaw and Granny's by myself at the ripe old age of six! Now, I'm paying for my raising!

Last night, Jayce began ice skating lesson #2. He wants to be a hockey player when he grows up, so he has to learn to skate. Just this past weekend, he wasn't even really skating on his own. He would just hold on to me and glide around the rink. Brad and I were enjoying watching him last night at his lessons. We were just talking about how little he really is when he gets with a whole group of his peers. We seem to always think of him as bigger than he really is when it is just us. His little group would skate "walk" from one side of the rink to the other, practice bending over, and play a game where they would gather toys to take back to the toy bin. We were quite impressed with his progress. So, what went wrong?

There were about 6 small classes going on at the same time on the rink. Jayce's group is the youngest and it goes on up to the adult class. Jayce's group had been skating at the far end of the rink. As I was chatting with another Mom, Brad says, "Look at your son!" Jayce was making his way across the rink, skating through the middle of all the classes. Wow, he was really skating (and not falling), but why wasn't he with his class?? He was just skating around with not a care in the world. He finally ended up chatting with the adult class. His teachers didn't seem to miss him! After a few minutes, I decided to go around the rink and attempt to get Jayce back on track. I reached Jayce at about the same time as one of his teachers. I asked him if Jayce was supposed to be down there with the adults. Well, we all knew the answer to that question. All the adults were like, "See ya Jayce, bye Jayce." All in all, I would say Jayce had been gone from his class about 8 minutes or so, just skating around talking to everyone (strangers).

I still get cracked up when I think about it. I will just be sitting around and just start laughing. It is funny, but it isn't! I worry about him going to Kindergarten and leaving his class or wondering off during recess. Or worse, having a stranger talk him into going with him/her. Yes, we've had the stranger talk more than once. We've had the "stay with Moma, or hold Daddy's hand" too many times to count. However, it just isn't enough. As for me, I hope this is the one and only time Jayce wonders off, unlike his dear old mother! Sorry Moma!

16 years ago today, Brad and I went on our very first date. I won't bore you with all the details, but it wasn't a dream date. Since we didn't make it to the movies on time, we just snuck in. It wasn't a dream date, but I knew that night I would probably follow him anywhere. Was I crazy, or what? How we met is the interesting part.

I got a wild hair one day and decided I wanted to move in with my dad. He lived just in the next town, but it would mean a new school for me during my 10th grade year. During my first typing class (computers weren't the thing yet), I saw this guy come from the back of the classroom to turn in his work. Wow, he was so cute! He didn't notice me, so I just let it go. The following year, I was back with my Mom in the little town I still call home. I didn't know this until later, but Brad and his friend came to the Sonic where I worked after school. I delivered his order, but really didn't notice him. I was just focused on getting the order delivered and getting on to the next one. According to Brad (I still tease him about this), he turned to his friend and said, "I'm going to marry her someday." Whatever! Some time afterwards (it could have been days or months), my boss told me we would be expecting a new cook. She warned us girls to leave him alone. We asked for his name anyway. My jaw just dropped as I cut my eyes toward my best friend, Buffie. She remembered me talking about this guy just a year earlier. My heart was beating out of my chest as Brad drove up in his little black truck. After he had worked there a few days, we were scheduled to have break together. He asked me out not knowing I had just broke up with my boyfriend that same day. Later on, Brad told me the story about coming to the Sonic and me not noticing him. He went to his grandmother and asked her to help him get a job there so he could meet me. He didn't notice me when I first noticed him, and I didn't notice him when he first noticed me!

16 years ago, we went on our first date. Tonight, we won't sneak into a movie, have that first kiss, or begin a new love. Tonight, we will share a meal with our kids, have game night, and curl up on the couch to watch our kids play together. Well, we will probably be trying to keep Jayce from bouncing off the walls and keep Lakyn from climbing on everything. This is our dream! 16 years and counting!

Slap Me Silly!

My cake, my cake! Oh, Brad did a wonderful job on my birthday cake. Here's the recipe:

Slap Me Silly

1 box German chocolate cake mix
(eggs, oil, & water per cake box directions)
1 can sweetened, condensed milk
12 oz container Cool Whip
chocolate syrup
caramel syrup
2 Heath candy bars, crushed

Using a 13X9 pan, bake cake according to package directions. Allow to cool 10 minutes. Using the handle of a wooden spoon, poke about 20 holes in cake. Pour the sweetened, condensed milk over the cake. Drizzle some chocolate syrup and caramel syrup over the cake, making a criss cross design. Cool cake completely. Next, frost with Cool Whip. Drizzle with more chocolate and caramel syrup on top in the same criss cross design. Finally, sprinkle entire cake with crushed Heath candy bars. Keep refigerated until ready to eat.
