Paying for my Raising!

Brad says Jayce gets it from me.....wondering off! My Mom has several stories about me wondering off. Sometime before Kindergarten, my Dad picked me up from the highway on his way home from work as I was making my way to the neighbor's house. When I rode the school bus for the first time in Kindergarten, I got off with some other kids instead of at my own house. Yep, my Mom just watched the school bus go right on by the house. Another time, I decided to be a "walker" instead of a bus rider, and walked to my Papaw and Granny's by myself at the ripe old age of six! Now, I'm paying for my raising!

Last night, Jayce began ice skating lesson #2. He wants to be a hockey player when he grows up, so he has to learn to skate. Just this past weekend, he wasn't even really skating on his own. He would just hold on to me and glide around the rink. Brad and I were enjoying watching him last night at his lessons. We were just talking about how little he really is when he gets with a whole group of his peers. We seem to always think of him as bigger than he really is when it is just us. His little group would skate "walk" from one side of the rink to the other, practice bending over, and play a game where they would gather toys to take back to the toy bin. We were quite impressed with his progress. So, what went wrong?

There were about 6 small classes going on at the same time on the rink. Jayce's group is the youngest and it goes on up to the adult class. Jayce's group had been skating at the far end of the rink. As I was chatting with another Mom, Brad says, "Look at your son!" Jayce was making his way across the rink, skating through the middle of all the classes. Wow, he was really skating (and not falling), but why wasn't he with his class?? He was just skating around with not a care in the world. He finally ended up chatting with the adult class. His teachers didn't seem to miss him! After a few minutes, I decided to go around the rink and attempt to get Jayce back on track. I reached Jayce at about the same time as one of his teachers. I asked him if Jayce was supposed to be down there with the adults. Well, we all knew the answer to that question. All the adults were like, "See ya Jayce, bye Jayce." All in all, I would say Jayce had been gone from his class about 8 minutes or so, just skating around talking to everyone (strangers).

I still get cracked up when I think about it. I will just be sitting around and just start laughing. It is funny, but it isn't! I worry about him going to Kindergarten and leaving his class or wondering off during recess. Or worse, having a stranger talk him into going with him/her. Yes, we've had the stranger talk more than once. We've had the "stay with Moma, or hold Daddy's hand" too many times to count. However, it just isn't enough. As for me, I hope this is the one and only time Jayce wonders off, unlike his dear old mother! Sorry Moma!

LOL! He'll be just fine. I had a wanderer, too...you just have to hold their hand until they're..they're...hmmmm. Just how old DO they have to be?
