What is Thanksgiving like at our house?
The day before Thanksgiving, I do most of the cooking. This year, Brad took the kids to the movies to see Tangled. On Thanksgiving, I will serve the following around lunch: baked turkey, cornbread dressing, giblet gravy, deviled eggs, green bean bundles, corn, mashed potatoes, lime pineapple salad, chocolate pie and pumpkin pie. I usually use a recipe given to me by my mother-in-law for the turkey which she found on food network. It is a yummy citrus/rosemary turkey. This year, since we have all been a little ill, I decided to let Rudy's do the turkey for me. The cornbread dressing is made up of white cornbread, sage, onions, chicken broth, eggs, and milk which is combination of my Moma's recipe and my mother-in-laws. My family likes giblet gravy which is made up of chicken broth, cream of chicken, cornstarch, chicken, and boiled eggs which is my Moma's recipe. I leave out the liver just because I don't buy a whole chicken. I use bone in chicken breast for making my broth and the chicken I need for the gravy. The chocolate pie is a recipe handed down from Brad's maternal grandmother. Brad's Mom showed me how to make the pies. The pumpkin pie recipe is the one on the back of Libby's can. Ha! The green bean bundles are whole beans wrapped in bacon and then this yummy sauce made up of butter, bean juice, onion, tarragon vinegar, regular vinegar and paprika. The lime pineapple salad comes from Brad's side of the family. They like to eat it with the dressing. For years, I wouldn't try it, but now I like it, too. I really want to learn how to make yeast rolls like my Aunt Debbie. I tried last year and they were a flop! I will try again. If it doesn't work out, there is always Brown and Serve! My rule usually is to make everything from scratch. The rolls are the one exception to the rule! Oh, and this year, I will make a big batch of carrots because it is Conley's favorite food! Sometimes, I will add dumplins but not this year. It isn't just food. It isn't just a meal. It is recipes handed down, memories made from childhood, making of new memories, and celebrating family.
We like to watch the Home Alone movies, hang out, take walks and watch football. Our Thanksgiving is all about enjoying family. The day after Thanksgiving, we will start decorating our house for Christmas.
Happy Thanksgiving and God Bless You!
